The role of the Sheriffs
There are two Sheriffs that are elected to support the Lord Mayor each year, advising and accompanying them on matters that are important to the City as well as hosting visiting dignitaries. A crucial part of the role is also to look after the welfare of the Judges at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) within the City and make sure that the courts' business runs smoothly. It's an office that dates back to the seventh century, marking it out as the oldest in the City of London, and a great privilege to hold.
Justice for all
Recently, I have been reflecting on the meaning of justice, not merely as a principle, but as a fundamental pillar of our society. With the Sheriffs of London residing and working at the Old Bailey during their year in office, it seems particularly appropriate to highlight justice as a central theme. The year 2025 also marks the 800th anniversary of the 1225 Magna Carta, which firmly established the principle that no one, not even the Crown or government, is above the law.
Although I am a fund manager by profession, the legal world has always been close to me. My wife, sister and cousin are all members of the legal profession. Recent events, together with my nomination, have prompted me to consider justice not solely as a legal matter, but as a collective obligation. The phrase "justice for all" serves as a timeless reminder to both institutions and individuals of our shared duty to uphold fairness, act with integrity and ensure that our systems serve the whole of society.
